Meta VR Glasses Plan Imax Entertainment Push
www.hollywoodreporter.com: The success of Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey brought new awareness to the different Imax experiences out there. Consumers flocked to cinemas equipped with Imax’s rickety old 50 mm film projectors, while those that were unable to snag those coveted tickets sought out Imax theaters that were digital but could show the film in its full-scale, immersive glory.

I thought this article about Meta’s new VR glasses was really interesting because it shows how technology is starting to change not just how entertainment is made, but how we experience it. Meta is working with companies like IMAX and Dolby to make the glasses feel more like having a personal movie theater wherever you are. The glasses are also supposed to support 3D movies, immersive sports, and other entertainment. What really stood out to me was the idea of bringing an IMAX-type experience into something that you can wear almost anywhere. As someone interested in theater and live entertainment, I think it is really cool from a technical standpoint, but I also wonder what this means for the actual shared experience of going somewhere to see a performance or movie. There is something different about sitting in a theater with a crowd compared to watching something completely by yourself through glasses. I think the technology is impressive, but I’m not sure it can replace that feeling of experiencing something together.
I feel like the answer will be yes and no. As someone who was interested in working with that kind of technology, I did not end up pursuing that path because I personally get 3D sickness very easily, and wearing something like that for a long period of time just does not help. For me and the minority of people who have that problem, unless it gets fixed, I do not think it will ever be too mainstream. I would also still want the huge IMAX experience in a movie theatre with large, good speakers. For movies like The Odyssey and Oppenheimer, Nolan movies basically, you just have to see them in a theatre, it just feels different. For that reason I like how Meta said they are not trying to replace the theatre, which feels quite reassuring, yet knowing they are still trying to work on new tech to make the film-watching experience more immersive is also quite intriguing.
