In my mind I truly didn’t even have a concept of how long six flags has been around or how long their parks have been operational. Fifty years is a note worthy milestone to hit though and from what this article is describing it seems six flags recognizes this fact, and will be giving its attendees an experience to match. Most of the things outlined in this article are what I would expect when it comes to a milestone overstay for a park, but there was one aspect that I did not expect. This was the museum that six flags is creating for the celebration, and the reason this stands out to me is that this is. Not something that I have seen an amusement park do for this kind of celebration before. It shows that the team at six flags cares and wants its attendees to know about the history of the parks as a whole, and it would be a cool thing to see. Of course this viewing of the museum will only be made better by the rest of the aspects of the celebration.
I always find theme park anniversaries so unique and different, everyone celebrates differently. This seems more of a “lets make money” celebration versus the “unlimited budget decorate the entire park for 2 years” celebration disney world in florida threw a few years ago. While absolutely they are bringing back some things like the ice cream parlor, they also are adding more premium upgrades most likely with their night time spectacular, most likely through a “vip seating” upgrade, and of course the brick program. It really has unfortunately turned into a marketing tactic companies use to make things look all special and cool, but really it just is normal operations and nothing too unique you can’t get again after the event is over. It really sucks as for example, while it’s a drastically different budget, Disney for their 25th anniversary made their castle a cake, and then for their 50th they put some glitter on it. It just really shows how much anniversary celebrations have changed.
This is the kind of American patriotism that seems more wholesome, more lovely than a lot of what we have going on currently- and I have mixed feelings about it. It is all too perfect timing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the park as a “great america” theme, for this to not say something about six flags political standing. Not to be that annoying person that makes everything political, but everything already is political. At the same time, I feel like if the state of our country isn’t what it is, then this sort of yeehaw hotdogs and 1970’s themed performances would be a lot more acceptable before we started debating whether or not we are still a democracy… Basically, this anniversary seems to be an all too convenient way to make this “throwback” into something mimicking the “ideal” American lifestyle box that the current federal office has been trying to squeeze everyone into. A title like “Great America” is too MAGA adjacent to be an accident– Six Flags knows their intended audience. They are hosting a throwback reunion to disguise this message that they are representing the US era that MAGA wants back.
