From Cultural Diplomacy to Creative Cities: A History of International Theatre Festival

Arts Management and Technology Lab: Festivals have existed for more than 4,000 years and have been closely associated with theatrical events for over 3,500 years. In the post-World War II period, international theatre festivals emerged as a distinct category within an ever-expanding festival landscape, bringing together performances from multiple cultural contexts in a limited timeframe. As their names suggest, these international theatre festivals foreground cross-cultural collisions, connections, and collaborations more explicitly than other types of festivals and theatres do (Fleury, 2026).

What is theater but a festival of people coming together to share a common story. The beauty of theater comes from the continuous effort to tell new stories to younger generations all over the world. Throughout history different cultures have developed and maintained different forms of storytelling that can all be defined as theater or performance. These mainstream theater festivals will always intertwine current problems such as politics and current events. By looking back on these festivals we are able to understand both the events and people's emotions regarding them. It can be hard to look back at past events and truly understand the emotions and motives behind different historical moments because we see through a modern lens. Theater and art connect emotion to these events and help us better understand the people taking part. Once we understand the people we can maintain a bigger picture and not infer or insinuate the true emotions of the past population.
