IATSE Slams Trump’s AI Exec Order Blocking State Regulation
www.thewrap.com: The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) lambasted President Donald Trump’s executive order blocking state regulation of artificial intelligence on Friday. The labor union said they were “deeply alarmed” by the effort, which is “an invitation for lawlessness” before national policies are in place.

Trump’s executive order to go against state laws attempting to regulate artificial intelligence and to withhold federal funding from those states feels like a big government move to me. It’s a shame that this is how bipartisan efforts come together- by a common enemy. I’m glad recent measures to ban state AI protections have been rejected by Congress. The AI moratorium being excluded from the National Defense Authorization Act is also a good sign. This article includes a formal statement by IATSE to urge policymakers to reject attempts at stripping states of their right to protect workers, and to encourage equity, transparency, and responsibility. There is a mention of Colorado’s Algorithmic Discrimination Act. The act aims to protect against bias and discrimination in automated decision making in high risk systems like healthcare, workplace safety, or employment. This act is certainly not unique among the states, such as Connecticut, Illinois, and California. I’m wondering what steps IATSE can concretely take to protect their workers.
