I don't know anyone my age who has a big rolling tool chest like the ones in this article. Now, that may be because none of my friends can afford a house, but I also think that to some degree it's a little inconvenient. You have to have a ton of tools in order to warrant needing a big tool chest, and at that point, I think most people probably do their work in one place. In other words, I think that these tool chests are marketed entirely towards full-time auto mechanics. I know that these tool chests wouldn't work for me, even if I had enough tools to fill all of them, because I need my stuff to be portable. I'd much rather have a bunch of smaller tool boxes that can fit in my car, as opposed to one huge toolbox that I can't move outside of the garage.

It seems that the most important consideration for a tool chest or similar appliance is if it will fit the needs of your work and if it can increase the organization without taking up too much space. If you simply will not use it to make your space more efficient and effective, it seems you are much better just making some drawers or shelves yourself to save yourself the money involved as well as losing any essential floor space, whereas if you depend on organization or personalize the storage system to make it more effective for you, a tool chest is a fantastic option to add to your shop. Lastly, reading this made me wonder about the available height options and if it is better to go with taller, skinnier options or for smaller wider options. At that point, it feels like a consideration of the space you have available.

The answer is yes I NEED a $500 tool chest. Do I have a place to put it? No I do not but one can dream of having a shop and a wall dedicated to tool storage, one that I can customize for me and have locations dedicated to certain tools. Preventing the where is this tool issue because It was in the stack of packout boxes that got unstacked and set somewhere in this room. Nope, it's in this location because that is where it goes and where it belongs. But as the article states large expensive tool chests are not for everyone and that is because not everyone has the space or money for these tool storage solutions. I believe that is why the pack out tool storage system has seen so much popularity and use across industries. Although it does have its downsides. For example, accessing the tool you need usually requires moving 2 or 6 boxes of other tools to get to the one you need. But it only takes up a corner in my bedroom and only weighs about 400lbs loaded.
