How to Design Costumes That Serve Story and Fandom—Lessons from 'FNAF 2'

No Film School: Her job on Five Nights at Freddy's 2 required diving into the world of a sequel (2023's successful Five Nights at Freddy's) and the famously dedicated fanbase that knows every detail of Scott Cawthon's universe. She threw herself headfirst into Reddit threads, cosplay photos, and reference folders for every character (yes, even Cupcake).

I've only recently gotten into FNAF but I know that the fandom cares so much about the media. So I really love that this designer wanted to take care to represent what the fandom knows about the characters. I also appreciated how they talk about keeping research organized, especially on a project where there is so much research required to get the outcome that you're looking for. It can be hard to keep track of all the information so I appreciated them touching on that. I think it was fun that the designer talked about Easter eggs that they had included that fans might not have picked up on. I think that often we expect designers to make choices solely for audiences to pick up on easily but I think it's also interesting to do subtle things that might ring a bell subconsciously for the audience but doesn't hit them over the head with it.
