Hollywood Jobs Are Disappearing

The Journal. - WSJ Podcasts: When I think about the people who make up Hollywood, I think of action stars, red carpet icons, A-list directors, and big studio bosses. But the vast majority who work in the industry have jobs that are way less glamorous.

This transcript of an interview with a journalist who covers the entertainment industry is pretty alarming, but not surprising. From the uptick in Artificial Intelligence in the arts to the flood outward from LA to other cities, the job market has been on the downturn for the past few years pretty drastically. This story of living below one’s means seems to be a common (and smart) move for workers in the entertainment industry, but it’s disheartening to hear someone talk through how it isn’t enough given a non-constant flow of jobs - especially someone so successful, with an Oscar on the shelf and big names repeatedly hiring him. He describes summer of 2023 as a turning point, to again no surprise. Post-strike, he didn’t work for a year. For anyone, that is a scary prospect. They discuss the oversaturation of streaming TV, a key cause of the macroeconomic downturn of the industry. Mendoza’s statistic regarding the 40% decrease in production initiation from 2022 to 2025 makes me wonder about how to prevent such an event in the future, or if that’s even systematically possible.
