Holiday Shows in NYC 2025: A Spirited Guide

New York Theater: Any guide to holiday theatergoing in New York City must begin with the three annual staples: “The Radio City Christmas Spectacular” starring the Radio City Rockettes, “George Balanchine’s the Nutcracker” (and about a dozen sweet or sassy alternatives), and the many variations of “A Christmas Carol.” But there’s more — plays, ballets, operas, concerts, musicals, burlesques, and hybrid entertainments that have reappeared each December, some for decades.

I love holidays, and I love live entertainment, so when I saw that there was a list of the must-see shows this winter, I was so excited to see what this year's list was and what was playing now that highlights the holiday season! After reading the article, I will not lie I am a little disappointed that most of them were recommending the Nutcracker or alternate versions of the Nutcracker. Do not get me wrong, The Nutcracker is a wonderful tradition and a beautiful show, but I also think that there are many more shows that can get into the holiday spirit that aren’t the same story. I appreciate the nod to a Christmas carol, but I also feel like there are soooo many other shows as well! I love a good Christmas story, a lovely holiday classic with such fun music and visual effects. I also think Elf the musical is such an underrated musical, it is so much fun and is very nostalgic and magical.
