The VR piece "Blur" and its focus on the ethics of cloning remind me of a book I read around a year ago: "Never Let me Go" by Kazuo Ishigiro. This book took the unique perspective of humans that had been cloned, questioning not just the ethical implications on current humanity, but how clones would fit into or be separated from humanity. The idea behind the book is that clones are not told they are clones, separated from humanity, and then harvested for organs when they become adults. Treading the line between what is and is not human, Ishigiro questions the difference between artificial and natural thoughts and emotions. In "Blur", it seems that the definition of humanity is also explored, however from a broader point of view. This experience asks the viewer to ponder rigid definitions of humanity and attempt to draw lines in the blowing sand that marks the separation between clones and their sources of DNA. As we get closer to this idea becoming reality, I wonder if this line can be drawn and how that might shape how clones are viewed either inside of or outside of society.
