Dolly Parton's Broadway-bound musical gets vicious reactions in Nashville: 'Drag bar in Vegas'

nypost.com: From what I hear, Dolly Parton’s new musical is going to need to be worked on 24/7, 365 to be remotely ready for its planned Broadway bow next year. Called “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the show, which is produced by Parton, her frequent collaborator Danny Nozell and Ambassador Theatre Group, opened earlier this month in her home state of Tennessee.

Editing and rewriting are probably the most important parts of creating new works. As a creative you have to be able to accept feedback and make major changes. if an audience doesn't like a show it won't do well, even if your thought behind it is perfect in your head how things get interpreted will absolutely change. It happens too often that someone has a "vision" and thinks they know exactly how everything should go, then when other people have disagreements or suggestions they dig into their own position even further. Figuring out how to listen to criticism and use it to improve is such an important skill everywhere but especially in theater. Hopefully for the sake of the Dolly Parton show, the writers, director, and producers are amenable to the feedback they have received and continue to improve upon their work, and make a show that lands well with its audiences.

I always think reviews of Broadway Bound shows are so entertaining. And I always like to see them compared to the reviews if it does actually go to Broadway. I love Dolly Parton so very much. She is a legend and an icon and I love her music and her vibe. However, I always have a hard time with these types of shows. I am always really distracted by the person that is supposed to be playing someone famous and this one is really bizarre to me because she is working on the team. I would never write a musical about myself..I don't know that just feels weird to me. And from what I gathered the piece needs a lot of work but that doesn’t mean it won't turn out well but I do not know if it is the type of show I would ever see. The only show I have liked is Beautiful the Carol King Musical. If this had real plot with talented actors I could get behind it.

I think it's really funny how the writer of this article quotes “drag bar in vegas” as the main insult and critique viewers have had thus far. As if Dolly Parton herself would see that as an insult. Honestly a very strange and kind of shady choice to make as the title, and.. not to sound too “libbed out” but what's wrong with a show you'd typically see in a drag bar on Broadway?? Controversial title choice aside, I'd say that most biopic-esq musicals and movies that release while the celebrity or public figure is alive end up being kinda bad. They also just don't make much sense and it's funny because it feels inherently narcissistic of them. It's disappointing but true that we are all obsessed with writing our own story. It'll be very interesting years from now when Dolly Parton dies (hopefully she lives forever) there will definitely be a biopic about her whole life and we will get to see her story from her perspective along with the world's perspective…

After the auditions for the part of Dolly in her musical went super viral on tiktok I have been looking forward to seeing this show so much because all of the audition videos were so fun and interesting to see. Reading this article makes me sad because it was so hyped up online leading up to Nashville. Unrelated to Dolly auditions going viral on tiktok... this past year I worked on a project that revolved around Dolly Parton, putting together a showcase featuring many of her songs featuring popular songs like ‘Jolene' and less popular songs like ‘Love Is Like A Butterfly’. After spending half a year researching her and her history I would love to see how she translated her life into a musical, despite being too long right now I think that is the whole reason the show opened in Nashville not Broadway was because edits can always be helpful and maybe this show just needs more edits which is ok because that is part of the process.
