I will be transparent and say that when this news came out I did not totally understand what was happening. All I knew was that it was robots and just took place in Japan but I didn't think casting mattered. I think a lot of people responded to this situation very quickly and not from a place of knowledge much like me. After more conversations I learned a lot more and understood what was happening. Someone made a comment about what this would look like at the high school level saying that people would cast it however they wanted and that is fine but when it is something like Broadway there is a higher level of responsibility. And when there are so few Asian roles like this one why choose to change the casting. This is a hard situation and always when more people get involved it gets more complicated but it would be my hope that people take the time to see the show and understand what is benign talked about so it can lead to growth.
