New York Theater: “Techne,” one of the shows that opened the 20th anniversary “Under the Radar” festival this weekend, reinforces its reputation for theater so experimental it makes you wonder what theater is. Comprised of a series of four “digital artworks” that will unfold over the next two weeks at BAM Fisher, “Techne” begins with “The Vivid Unknown,” which the program describes as an “AI driven immersive installation.”

As someone who has strong opinions on using AI to create art I find this installation to raise a lot of questions for me. My main question is why not just have an artist draw the scenes and locations but oh well. I think the premise of the installation is fascinating and reminds me of the Zoom Diptych assigned in Basic Design 1. Through abstract art such as this that has no clear plot or meaning our brains inherently search for it and end up seeing things that are truly fascinating. As pointed out by the author after 90 minutes of staring at images it became tedious but its lack of clarity and shapelessness started to beg the question of what is art really? Does it truly need a shape? What is a shape? “Does time have a shape?” or is it truly just all relative. I found myself reflecting on my own Diptych and wondering the exact same questions.
