'Sing Sing' Play to Be Performed by Original Cast in New York

variety.com: What started as a goofy, groundbreaking play that debuted inside the Sing Sing Correctional Facility — and then inspired the Golden Globe-nominated movie “Sing Sing” — will return to the stage, as the formerly incarcerated actors of the A24 film will reunite to perform “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code” live in New York.

This is just an incredible story. I’m glad the revival is featuring original cast members. The Sing Sing prison’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts program is a great one. I was interested to see that it’s based on a true story, and that one of the actors was exonerated after 24 years in prison. I was able to look a little bit more into the program than the article goes, and the approach of reimagining oneself is pretty powerful (not to mention, effective for avoiding a second incarceration). Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code isn’t the only original work to be produced by the program. It is actually one of many, alongside many productions of existing published works. RTA is a relatively new organization, having only been started in 1996 by Katherine Vockins. The movie after the organization ‘Sing Sing’ mixes formerly incarcerated members of the group with professionally established actors. It was released by A24, and I generally love their films. I especially like the ending of this one, as it features real life footage from the RTA program at Sing Sing with many of the actors who portrayed themselves in the film.
