Road Test: The New Earthworks SR117 Condenser Vocal Microphone

ProSoundWeb: Earthworks has been around for a while; it’s a family-owned company in New England (specifically, Milford, New Hampshire) that has a reputation for designing high-quality microphones at a price point that’s usually not for the faint of heart. So when I heard about the company’s new handheld vocal condenser, the SR117, coming in at $199 MAP, well, there was no question — I had to try it out (and, of course, tell y’all about my experience).

It always surprises me to learn about the new technology that gets developed in the sound world because microphones seem so basic that I forget how much work goes into making them and the different nuances that each kind of microphone has and also how they can differ based off of the company that produces and manufactures them. I feel like it is also very impressive that this microphone works in so many different spaces and also is compatible with both old and new technology and mixers and what not. Often times I hear about a microphone being championed in a specific context but then it fails to perform when taken out of the context so hearing that this microphone can perform in a lot of different spaces for different purposes is cool. Another detail that I really liked was the no logos on the mic and how the company said it was made for the cameras and with workers in mind so that they did not have to gaff or figure out how to hide logos for the camera which I thought was super smart marketing.
