Hold on to Your Butts review – Jurassic Park redone with DIY dinos

Stage | The Guardian: Hold on to your … what? Your enjoyment of this show may well depend on whether you recognise the title. Many will immediately recall a chain-smoking Samuel L Jackson uttering that warning of imminent jeopardy in Jurassic Park. Everybody else will be playing catch up as the 1993 dino saga is recreated with nerdy detail and velociraptor-like speed on a tiny stage using a budget more Scrooge than Spielberg.

At its core theater is play. If the company is having a good time chances are the audience will too. This Jurassic park parody was a nerdy labor of love, creating dinosaurs out of found objects. Could a couple enthusiastic friends put on a better production than a million dollar corporate mega musical? As cliche as it sounds I believe the people truly are the most important piece of the puzzle. If you’re working with people you enjoy spending time with, who knows what you can create. After all, dozens of theater companies were started by a bunch of college friends creating art together. What then happens if we’re able to give funding to these small theater troupe? What could be created? What funds and grants are in place for these types for groups? Is there a regional theater devoted to this niche of theater arts? Could there one day be?
