‘A Complete Unknown’: How Its Designers Brought Back Greenwich Village – and Bob Dylan’s Skinny Jeans

www.yahoo.com/entertainment: François Audouy and Arianne Phillips, the production designer and costume designer of “A Complete Unknown,” both benefited from the pandemic- and strike-related delays that gave them more time to prep for James Mangold’s look at the first few years of Bob Dylan’s career in New York City.

Re-creating the past is a fascinating and beautiful challenge. It is interesting to look around and see what remains, both in whole and in part. What from the past survives time, and what gets forgotten? Bob Dylan’s jeans in this movie are a good example, the 501 cut still exists but the Super Slims couldn’t be found. One found its way through history and the other was lost to it. When researching looks and designs from history, I always wonder about what personal connections that might exist in what I’m researching. Did my parents wear clothes like these? How did my grandparents feel in this cultural climate? I liked the costume designer’s comment about understanding the enigma of the historical figure and being true to their spirit. I think the most effective designs don’t copy the past but find its essence, using that to bring the audience into the world and allow them to find their own connection to it.

I have already been surprised before at the things that I can’t find on the internet or through other research, but this article reminded me of it again. The fact that they couldn’t find any remaining pair of super slims surprised me, though it does make sense they wouldn’t be in normal stock, I had figured that at least one person would have had or been selling them online. Not being able to find many pictures or renderings of early 1960’s New York surprised me as well. I have thought to myself, why should I take photographs of the things or places of my life if I know there are already so many photos of everything online, however hearing that the team wasn’t able to find many photos of New York has made me rethink what I thought. This article has given me more determination to document and encourage others to document their lives and experiences so that people in the future can have references to what it was all like.
