New Project Will Offer $15,000 Grants to Early Career Designers
TheaterMania: A new organization is offering $15,000 grants to theater designers just beginning their careers. The 1/52 Project is funded by designers with shows running on Broadway who are encouraged to donate one week every year of their weekly royalties to the fund. The grants are meant to encourage early career designers from historically excluded groups, with the aim of diversifying and strengthening the Broadway design community.

Okay, making theatre more accessible as a career, I see you! I love this. This is a huge step in the right direction to end the stigma around the arts. If you have connections in Hollywood or on Broadway chances are you can afford to have a career in the arts not having to worry about if you can afford rent and food. A more level playing field will allow those who start lower on the financial ladder to have access to more of the same opportunities solely because they don’t have to worry about surviving for a second. Grants like these ones show a lot of compassion for all kinds of people who otherwise wouldn’t have had the option to even try. As financial aid like this continues to become available there would no longer be the divide between incredibly rich and famous to the stereotype of working actors being poor and lazy. It feels nice to be acknowledged and validated for a struggle that affects so many within the industry.
