Cobra Kai Creators Really Want to Use AC/DC Song But Can't Afford It
consequence.net: Even the current No. 1 show on Netflix can’t afford AC/DC! Creators of the popular series Cobra Kai have been hoping to work the legendary rock band’s classic hit “Thunderstuck” into an episode over the course of its four seasons, but the price is too steep.

Ironically, it seems to be to the benefit of both AC/DC and Cobra Kai that the show couldn’t afford Thunderstruck. From AC/DC’s side, the song is at risk of over-saturation as it is. After its use in Iron Man, the song has gone from being cool in film to being a source worthy of parody and full of cheese, which is probably much closer to how Cobra Kai, a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, had planned to use it in its montages. With such frequent exposure, the song would fully become a joke. A frame of reference for this problem is Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. When used in Shrek in 2001, it carried the same weight of the original Cohen song (if not more, thanks to a more fitting cover). Now, after being used so much to signify emotion, if someone tried to add Hallelujah to their TV show in a serious way, it would only cause eye rolls.
Meanwhile, from Netflix’s perspective, I would argue that their money is better spent on the show itself rather than paying a crazy amount of money to AC/DC when a cheaper song would do just as well. Even if the show could afford it, that doesn’t mean it should.
