A record quarter for L.A. filming, but recovery is uncertain

Los Angeles Times: Filming in Los Angeles rose to a record in the fourth quarter of last year as Hollywood recovered from the COVID-19 doldrums. But data for the full year reflected a more complex narrative for the business of local film and TV production, with uncertainty continuing into 2022.

This article was super interesting to me. I think the results are rather predictable. When given the go ahead, production soared. People were ready to get back to work and saw the financial benefit of producing new media immediately. I think this easily translates to the Broadway industry. People were excited to get back to performing. Audiences were hungry to see shows. However, I worry the entertainment industry has been acting in too much haste. Perhaps a gradual ease back into producing at the rate, and in some cases beyond the rate we were producing at before, would have been better. I am interested to see if there are less shoot days for this first quarter of 2022 due to omicron variant. Just as there will be less Broadway shows playing every show, due to crew and cast testing positive. Of course, we have no idea what the future holds, however I wonder how greatly things like filming shows and movies contribute to the country’s overall trend in positive cases.
