5 tips for more equitable meetings

www.fastcompany.com: When asked to describe how they feel about meetings, many professionals will use the same language: “boring,” “inefficient,” and “unproductive.” While these descriptors may ring true for some, they do not ring true for all. For some, meetings aren’t boring—they’re stressful. They aren’t inefficient—they’re isolating. They aren’t unproductive—they’re confusing.

I love these tips! I feel like in my high school experience, something that was preached to me over and over again was advocating for myself. But often that translated to my teachers insisting that if we ever wanted to “make it” we would have to be downright pushy. That we had to make sure our voices were heard, no matter how hard we had to yell. It never really sat right with me, and I’m glad I’m not the only one. I love the idea of asking everyone in the room, no matter their status, to speak. It is often too intimidating to throw yourself in the discussion, but if everyone is doing it, and it truly feels like your opinion is being sought out, it might be less scary. These tips make me really hopeful that we might be moving towards a world where (typically toxic male traits) loudness and cockiness are not the only ways to make it.
