VR system moves furniture with robots to make virtual objects real

newatlas.com: As amazing as VR can be, nothing breaks the immersion like putting your hand right through a wall. While some teams are using haptics to simulate the sense of touch, a new study has a clever alternative – robots that move physical furniture around, so there’s a real chair or wall waiting for you.

The title of this article really drew me in and embarrassingly enough my mind immediately imagined a Terminator-like Android literally pushing walls in front of someone. Then my mind imagined a more realistic tract system on the floor that deploys the walls and furniture when needed. However nothing could have prepared me for rOOMBAS WITH SCISSOR LIFTS. ARE YOU KIDDING? I laughed so hard. I think it’s a fine idea as an experiment but I have some questions, are the creators controlling the roombas during game play? Or are the roombas somehow programmed to the game and know exactly when to go where? I think there are a few issues here besides the obvious room for error but also no one has a set in their house like that. I think they should create some sort of gloves that you put on that simulate pressure when you touch something. You don’t need something physical because the human brain is so easily duped. If your brain sees the object and your hand going to touch it and then feels pressure on your fingers, it’s going to be real to the brain and you wont want to push further. I think it’s a more realistic solution especially for home use.

While I must say that my imagination is not as adventurous as what Rhiannon outlined in the comment above, the title of the article did catch my eye fairly quickly. My dad has what would now be considered an "old" VR headset in a fairly cramped area, so using it often either restricts you to a chair or to an area that is far too small for any meaningful engagement with the VR space. Often times I would imagine what the experience would be like in an open area. With this extra level of immersion through physical objects behind the screen, a whole new world of possibilities opens up. Configuring a setup like this in a design studio that has material samples now allows the designers to physically interact with whatever they are designing. The model could be full scale in VR, with the roombas moving around the samples to react to wherever the designer wants to check out next. Again, though, this is restricted to areas that already have wide open space and the necessary requirements to have roombas and for them to function properly. But now we know that it is possible, it's only a matter of time until someone dreams up the next big thing.

This is so insanely cool! I have always been interested in VR since I’ve heard about it, and when I first tried it, I was honestly blown away. I did not think it would be as immersive as it was, but the way everywhere you can possibly look is filled with the environment is insane to me. Now not only having the ability to see the VR, but to feel it is so surreal. I hope that someday this technology becomes more accessible, so I have even a chance of trying it. Especially in this pandemic time, I wish VR technology was a little more evolved, because it would be such a great resource to take advantage of. To be able to completely escape from a place you must quarantine in by just simply putting on the equipment is a concept with endless possibilities. And now, seeing this article is just so cool and makes me so excited to see the future of VR as it continuously evolves.

I am a huge fan of anything virtual reality, literally anytime I see an article about any kind of new virtual reality thing I am always drawn to. My brother and I played with our oculus every single day over quarantine, it was definitely a life saver. Also my mom absolutely love the virtual reality oculus set we have. I found her in our kitchen with the virtual reality set on and she was like “come see my new living room” and fully showed me the virtual room where she was hanging out in which was literally just another living room with a virtual television and a virtual couch and everything. I think VR is one of the coolest things to be invented and Ready Player One is such a good movie that I’ve rewatched too many times because I just love video games and virtual reality, so it was super cool to read this.
