Unemployed in New Mexico: A set dresser shares her story

Business Insider: I was first introduced to film in 2011 when "The Avengers" filmed in New Mexico. I got on the shoot as background and stand-in because I'm a big fan of Joss Whedon. He was directing, so I thought it would be cool. I enjoyed everything about it and decided to pursue work in the industry. Set decoration has been my home for the last six years.

This article was especially impactful because it made me consider how lucky I am to only be a student in these times. Had I been older, or even younger, the coronavirus pandemic would have completely rearranged my life. Although it may seem like a horrible situation to college students, we do have a sense of community within our schools that those already in the industry may lack, and I am truly grateful for it. This line was particularly relatable: “I think the most surprising thing has been discovering how much I crave routine.” There is a specific struggle in staying motivated as an artist during the pandemic that I have personally witnessed and been impacted by myself. Without a schedule, I have been a lot less productive, and although a small sense of normalcy has returned to many students’ lives with classes beginning, there are those in the industry that still feel that “anxiety” of the uncertainty of day-to-day life, and it is important to consider them. Ultimately, it is important to look outside your personal struggles and ‘bubble’ to understand the struggles of others, especially now. Empathy can lead to a lot of new ideas and changes for those in need.
