Variety: Asia’s stuttering film and TV production outlook stems in large measure from the relative caution with which the region’s governments have approached the coronavirus outbreak.
Calling on experience garnered with several recent bouts of epidemic disease (SARS in 2003, Avian Flu in 2013 and recurring waves of Dengue fever), governments around the Asia-Pacific region quickly urged their populations to mask up.

I think it’s really smart to look at how different countries reacted to the pandemic and how their reaction affected the outcome of certain industries. It’s awesome to see that places like New Zealand are back in production because the head of their country (a woman by the way) was smart and proactive versus being reactive. The fact that South Korea and Iceland were the only two places that Netflix was able to shoot internationally speaks volumes. While I think this article summarizes a lot, what I do like and I think is important is the fact that the entertainment industry as a whole is experiencing a stop and go which can do a lot of damage to funding. Sadly, the in person aspect of theatre is also necessary for films and tv shows and broadcasting networks. The Trevor Noah show has been filmed from his apartment for the last six months. Anyone who does anything in entertainment is not thriving in this pandemic environment.
This article provides diverse information about several different countries in the Asia-Pacific regions and therefore gives a reader a better understanding of why/when production of TV/film restarted in those regions - and what shut them back down. It is alarming to see how in almost all of the countries mentioned, the cases spiked right around the time production restarted - which obviously is due to the fact that many countries did not make the right moves preemptively and then also opened back up too fast. For the last 5 months, I've been saying I want to move to New Zealand because they really have it going well there. A smart woman prime minister who preemptively stopped the spread of the virus leads the country in their joy of being able to reopen without worry and restart life such as begin production once again so at least, some pieces of this hard-hit entertainment industry could come back to life sooner.
It’s good to see that parts of our industry are able to get to work around the world. That being said I think it really shows the difference in countries responses to the virus and how quickly they get certain industries back to work. Countries like South Korea and New Zealand have been heralded for their efforts in suppressing the virus in their own countries which is amazing for industries like our that rely on human interaction. The interesting part to me that I don’t think they could touch in an article like this summarizing the entertainment industry but I wonder how theatre is doing in countries in Asia-Pacific. I keep seeing articles like this talking about the ability for smaller films and tv production going back to work but I do begin to wonder where the theatre and concert industries are headed in these countries as the United States moves more and more towards opening up fully wether they should or not.
Watching and learning how other countries are dealing with the effects of the pandemic is an important way for our country to have the fastest road to recovery and returning society back to normal. For theater, this live component is very important and it is amazing how other countries are able to bring this back for the public. This is not because of how they are admitting people into the theater or how they are seating the audience, but how these countries are minimizing the spread of the pandemic itself. Though America is having its own struggle with this due to poor legislation and societal effort, Looking to see how the theaters in safer countries are opening will allow our theaters to have a fast turn around once things start to look better here. The main causes of spread is definitely face to face conversations, eating together with people, and just people's spit transferring airborne. If people could go to a theater, sit silently with a mask separate from others, there should be no fear of spread. It is because so many people go to the theater and talk to each other, eat at the venue, and also show reactions such as laughing and crying that cause this spread, making theater so unsafe during this pandemic.
