Please, please, help artists survive

New York Daily News: Since the age I proudly chucked my pacifier in the dumpster, music has spoken to some deep part of me nothing else could. It has been my refuge, my inspiration, my greatest connection to others. I’m privileged to work full-time as a musician in the performing arts. What a blessing, to create at this level alongside some of the brightest humans around.

For many Americans, art is their way of life,. And not just spiritually or morally, but financially. This article pointed out to me something I had not considered before: Most artists live in urban and expensive areas. These areas are hotspots for these artists to find work and make a living. Though this may sound risky, it really wasn't a high risk living somewhere like New York doing art until the pandemic. Though the government had implemented $600 per week in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance for the first month of the pandemic around March, this number has nearly cut in half to $373 per week. It is impossible for artists in such urban areas to afford their living with just this. Though this is the world is progressing towards technology, and many artists have found new ways to work online, this is not the case for all. The government should reimplement the $600 per week for the artists who need it.
