Dining Services Transforms for Fall Semester

www.cmu.edu/news: The Underground is again flipping all-day pancakes. The inviting aromas of coffee and lattes and cappuccinos are filling La Prima Espresso Co. And even Dave Collins, a favorite among Tartan students, is back at his familiar register at The Exchange, catching up with everyone and anyone.

Even though I am not currently living in Pittsburgh, I am so grateful that many of the hardworking people in our kitchens and behind our counters are safely back to work and back to brightening up students’ days. Too often we as students can sometimes take for granted the hard work our food and janitorial service staff provide, when in fact we truthfully owe so much to them. Without having food so affordable and accessible on campus many of us would be unable to eat between classes, or perhaps at all, which would lead to us not being able to perform or function at the standard we are able to. Not only are they making food accessible, they are also making it safe for us in the time of COVID; which of course is no easy feat. Taking a moment to appreciate those that help us succeed is so important to a community, so I would like to take a moment and thank those that are on the frontlines of our campus and are helping us to thrive, succeed, and give us a sense of familiarity in a time like no other.

Well...all I can say is that this is going to be the new normal for a while. While things like the Plexiglas-glass barriers don't really affect the functionality of the food service facilities, it is still going to take some time to get used to. For example, you walk into the bank, and you expect there to be a thick plexiglass barrier between you and a teller, that is, if anyone goes to a teller anymore. The point is, you're used to that. It makes sense to you. Walking into a restaurant, you don't expect that right now. I don't expect to be separated from the employees with a barrier, but we will get used to it. All I can say is that at least we have found a way to let these places reopen. The lack of seating is another issue all on its own. I get that they don't want people congregating if they don't want to, but how about single person tables spaced out? Seems a little weird to me...but in time, we will get used to it.

I’m really glad Carnegie Mellon is doing so well despite all these Coronavirus challenges. As somebody who worked in food service since middle school, dealing with nasty customers has always been and will continue to be a challenge. But working food service during Coronavirus has been an entirely different animal. Not only are people rude, but are disrespectful with their mask usage… etc… this is just the tip of the iceberg. Food workers at CMU are likely experiencing the same thing. I know that I will always be respectful and go the extra mile for food service workers.

With these changes CMU is making for coronavirus… the plexiglass, mobile ordering… it’s all good news. This means ease for the workers and for students getting food as well. I am really proud to be apart of a vibrant community that is attempting to make changes for their students, student employees, and faculty. I had my first Underground burger today and it was great!
