A petition for a 'Seat Out to Help Out' theatre ticket scheme is gaining support, with over 40,000 signatures

London Evening Standard: A petition calling for the government to introduce a 'Seat Out to Help Out' scheme to get theatres back up and running has gained more than 40,000 signatures.

It calls for chancellor Rishi Sunak and culture secretary Oliver Dowden to create an equivalent to the Eat Out to Help Out scheme for theatre, to boost the beleaguered industry.

I think that government subsity for live entertainment would be a great idea to both stimulate the economy and entertain the general public. Helping theatres become profitable will allow actors and technicians to go back to work and reinvest their money back into the economy. If the U.K. government does not help out the theatre industry, many communites could be completely devastated as they rely on the traffic of the theatres to keep people coming to their shops and resturnats. Allowing the theatres to die out could have a ripple effect on the rest of the community.

While I do love that Eat Out to Help Out is offering their support and brainstorming ideas to help bring life back to the arts sector, this partnership certainly doesn’t come without its flaws. While Eat Out to Help Out has done incredible things to help restaurants in the U.K. stay afloat, dining out has recently been linked to an increase in numbers of COVID across the pond. I question whether the U.K., and of course the U.S. as well, is ready to be accepting help from Eat Out to Help Out if their work has directly or indirectly led to an increase of positive diagnoses. If Eat Out to Help Out is still willing to offer their advertising services a month or two from now as opposed to present day, I would hope the arts sector welcomes them and their ideas with open arms. If theaters anywhere around the world open to soon, there may be too many monetary and liability repercussions to permanently re-open.

I think that this is a good idea for figuring out how to kick start the culture sector of the UK again and get it up and running. I do fear that it may lead to an increase in COVID cases as groups will start to gather in large numbers which may lead to a disregard for proper masking and social distancing practices. I think that this is somewhat of the outcome of the Eat Out to Help Out program. But I do think that this is a fantastic starting point for finding a more permanent, and possibly socially distanced, solution to this problem The idea of the government lending a hand to this process is a very important idea and will be both beneficial to the organizations but also the government because investing in culture is a very good way to improve an economy and start people spending money "out and about" again.
