What Archivists Want You To Know About Preserving Your Records

Dance Magazine: Maybe it's because dancers tend to have good memories, sharpened by years of retaining complex choreography. Perhaps it's because performing demands we surrender fully to the present moment. Whatever the reason, dance artists often don't start organizing and preserving their records until late in their careers or after retirement—if at all.

As a total nerd for document organization and boxes and files and labels - oh gosh I could go on forever - I really liked these tips! I think the one that stuck out to me is not over-organizing. You do not need to create a ridiculously complex system with codes and whatnot; just make sure your things are clearly labelled and put in their appropriate boxes! I also enjoyed the tip about not relying on office supplies like paperclips, scotch tape, post-it notes, and whatnot. Just putting things in file folders is much better for keeping things undamaged. As for the digital archiving, I'm still sort of new to all that, so I really liked the tips about making sure whatever you have on a cloud service is also kept on an external hard drive of sorts. As people always say... "Have two copies in two separate places!" and I guess that counts for digital copies too!
