The Mascot Hall of Fame -- From Big Idea to Opening Day in 6 Months
ExhibiTricks: The Museum Exhibit Design Blog: Jacqueline Johnson leads client projects at Chicago Scenic Studios and has more than a decade of experience in the museum field — including positions at Chicago’s Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art. Jacqueline was kind enough to offer this guest post about the recently opened Mascot Hall of Fame.

I’m surprised that The Mascot Hall of Fame didn’t already exist. Beside the fact that there is a museum exists for almost anything, like the world's largest yarn ball. Will the mascot hall of fame only pertain to mascots that are apart of a sports team, or will it go into things like mascots for cereal, like tony the tiger. I’m wondering what they will do to fill out this museum, the article did mention that “In just six months, artisans and fabricators built the seven exhibits areas and environments that round out the interactive, fun, and family-oriented experience”, will this museum be educational fun or more fun fun. Will they offer learning about the creation process of mascots? Will they go into the history of the use of mascots? I’m interested in what they plan to do with this hall of fame museum. I don't know if I will go out of my way to go experience this museum for myself but since i'm only a state away from the location, and if I have time when I’m in town I might consider checking it out.
Like Yma, I am surprised that a mascot museum did not already exist, but I do think it is a cool idea so I guess I’m glad it exists now. I always think it is crazy what can happen when passionate people have an idea and are willing to work towards it. I don’t know much about what goes into creating and building an entire museum, but it seems like 6 months is not a very long time to make everything happen, so I am very impressed they were able to do all of that. I think the museum sounds like something that would be fun for young children to go to, they talked about how adults would be interested in it too, but it still seems way more geared toward children. I am not sure if I would ever go on my own to this museum, but maybe if I was with a child and had to take them. It does seem really great for kids as it seems to be a mix of fun and education which is really important.
I thought this article was really cool, and something that I had never thought about. I love that there are people who are devoted to making certain given aspects of our world more accessible and understandable. I never would have thought that a museum for sports mascots would exist or be popular but I think it is so amazing that there will now be an appreciation for the creation of these creatures. Just as much as any other creative art, the creation of mascots takes a lot of design and planning so that whoever will be wearing the costume can be comfortable and able to move around. Even though the museum is geared more towards children, I think the experience could be interesting for pretty much everyone. I hope the museum succeeds and allows children to learn more about the technical side that goes into the creation of sports mascots.
Anything can be done in that short amount of time with the right management, Disneyland was built in under 18 months after ground broke. It is certainly impressive today with all the standard and regulations and layers of people stuff has to go through that anything gets done in time, but if you want something done quickly and effectively give it to folks who work in the American Theatre. The museum itself is so wonderfully eccentric placed right in the middle of a perfectly eccentric town. I think mascots should have a hall of fame, they are what we identify with our favorite teams so readily, I think eventually college mascots with also be included. The Leprechaun from Notre Dame, and the Trojan from USC are so immediately identifiable with their schools that they likewise deserve a spot. Also I was never really scared of them either, some people are scared of Mickey or clowns or Santa Claus, but I was never scared of mascots because they were fun and colorful but not aggressive, they were like the best kind of cheerleader.
The Mascot Hall of Fame is definitely an interesting idea but overall seems like a really cool concept to bring to life. In a way that I’ve never thought of before, I could see the Mascot Hall of Fame as almost a costume design museum, as the mascots for each team are essentially costumes/characters. Looking at the museum in this light made me much more interested. I think it’s a pretty cool concept, especially for die-hard sports fans. I like all of the interactive exhibits, as I feel that those make children’s museums WAY more exciting for both the children and the adults attending them. It seems like they put this museum together VERY quickly, so I really hope they thought everything through and executed it nicely. I think it’s a great concept and I hope it stays open for a long time. If I make it over to Chicago anytime soon, I hope to go visit.
The title of the article didn’t really shock me – a lot happens in very quick spans of time. Anything can be done quickly these days just at a price. After reading that there were only seven exhibit areas, it made sense as to why this project was done so quickly especially with the ability to hire out subcontractors. This article, in general, wasn’t that informative. It left me with several questions such as how much did this project cost, how many people were working on this project, and how Chicago Scenic Studios works as such a great team. This article was cool to learn about The Mascot Hall of Fame if I were going to visit but wasn’t really too insightful on how project management of a quick process opens. The article’s tag line wasn’t ever really fully explained. I find it cool to know that Chicago Scenic Studios works on cool museum projects like this one and pierogi festival but I wish it went into more detail about the actual process.
