CYC Buyer's Guide
et cetera...: We here at ETC get a lot of questions about which cyc light to choose. (They’re all so great and honestly, it’s like asking to pick our favorite child!) We’ve found that it’s not a simple question to answer because there are a number of factors that play into the decision. It’s about your hanging infrastructure, your color needs, what you are trying to light, and of course, budget.

My high school used strip lights to light our cyc, so it is interesting to see the fixture design that ETC has for actual cyc lights. I think is interesting that all these fixtures just look like their LED fixtures but smaller – the on fixture is in fact just a Source Four Lustr with a fun looking reflector on the front of it (a cyc adapter) so that it can be focused to a cyc. It makes plenty of sense though – why make something brand new when you can just modify what you have to make it work. That is sort of a mantra of how theatre gets put together. I was also fascinated by the color mixing abilities in these fixtures. In school we learn that colors in light were just mixed with red, blue, and green, so I am interested in how color mixing in these fixtures can have four, five, r seven colors to mix with.
