Pitfall for Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as workplace accident nets $5K fine

www.winnipegsun.com: The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has faced the music and admitted responsibility for its part in a workplace accident that sent a stagehand to hospital suffering broken bones to his face and hands.

The WSO pleaded guilty in court Thursday to failing to provide a safe workplace and was fined $5,000.

As a stagehand myself, I can understand how something like this could happen to anyone. Technical Theatre is a risky art that combines the regular pitfalls of a stage with things like power tools, heights, heavy loads, and so on. What intrigues me is how the stagehand was completely unaware of the hazard. Granted, it’s dark and easy to miss and so on, but the fact that the Technical Director didn’t mention an 11-foot drop to anyone is nearly inexcusable. One of the responsibilities of a Technical Director is to know the venue and its flaws, especially if they present danger to the crew, actors, or the audience. Safety is a necessity in a building process and attention to safety must be preserved, no matter how rushed or distracted someone may be. Without a safe venue, the possibilities of a showtime disaster increases exponentially, as well as gives the theatre the obvious risk of being fined or closed down.
