LED Lighting--Top 10 benefits

EDN: While LED lighting has been known to consume less energy and have a long lifetime for greater energy and maintenance savings than incumbent technologies, there is much more to this solid-state lighting technology. LED lighting was originally used for indicator lights on various electronic devices but through the years, this technology has penetrated into numerous industries. Here are the top 10 benefits of LED lighting that made this possible.

Honestly I am somewhat surprised that there are still recent articles about the benefits of LEDs that we already all currently use. I know that not everyone knows about the advantages, but a lot of this is old news. Not all of it is though, and I have never thought about the fact that LEDs are not nearly as sensitive to temperature extremes such as fluorescent lights, which need to heat up to a specific temperature in order for the mercury to emit light.

With how fast LED technology is changing and becoming cheaper and more powerful I bet that we will see a high-powered LED sources very soon and will be comparable to most of the arc sources and be able to act like a spot lamp. With the LED source four coming out having an array of LEDS that have the ability to have little to no color still is amazing but I hope that we will see soon a single chip that can make most or all of the colors that are in the rainbow. It will be interesting to see how fast this technology continues to change in the coming years since it has sped up so much in the last few years from LED indicators to the most advanced LEDs that are comparable to normal LED light bulbs.

Like Will said I am somewhat surprised as well... LEDs have long been touted as the future of lighting both commercially and in entertainment venues. I know LEDs will certainly make things easier for both the designers and actors. In the limited time I acted I was in a large costume and was dying from how hot it was. LEDs will also make it easier for designers saving them hours of cutting color and placing that color.(Though some inserts will need to be used frost etc.) I am curious as to how fast the price of LEDs will go down so it truly is a practical option for households as well as theatres.

I went to USITT this year and went to a demonstration on LED technology and learned a bunch of info similar to the info in this article. I think the reason that LED technology is back in the spotlight is because the tech is becoming much more accessible and useful than it has been. Led tech has been around for a while now but the tech behind it hasn't been effective enough for mass implementation into theaters because they looked to harsh and produced off colors but now they can be dimmed and can fade smoothly through thousands of different colors that look good on stage
