Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots New
lajollaplayhouse.org: Yoshimi must choose between two boyfriends, but first she’s got to take down an army of pink robots. This magical tale of love and the struggle for survival is a poignant and humanistic story set to the music of The Flaming Lips.

It's so cool to look at the rehearsal project of this new work and see how they are putting it all together. I love how you're able to see the process of putting it together while also taking into account design aspects and the thoughts of your character and how you form them throughout rehearsing.
It was interesting to hear about the rock-musical idea, but I wish there had been more discussion and exploration of the "virtual rehearsal process" and seeing some of the songs being performed. We saw a bit of the video regarding the virtual planning, but I'm confused about what it was necessarily. Did they navigate and plan out the scene changes virtually? There appears to be quite a bit of moving pieces during scenes - particularly with actors on top of them.
I really like this album of the Flaming Lips, and I'm still curious as to how the music would play within a rock musical.
This show just sounds esthetically fascinating. A 14-foot robot puppet, dancers in “glowing” LED costumes and stunning projections. The rehearsal process also seems so interesting. I'd love to be the SM on this show especially seeing, I guess maybe it was the ASM that was moving the automated scenery around the room during rehearsals. Plus the story also sound interesting which is always a plus for a New Work. I remember there was a time when I just preferred not to see certain things on stage, but rather on film, especially things like this with robots and puppets. However when it is done well it is really effective and amazing. I'd love to see this show.
I actually think i might try and see this while Im in California over break. Ive always loved The flaming lips, specifically Yoshimi battles the pink robots. This production not only looks well produced and solid but the design work with the LEDs and costumes and lighting looks really interesting. This is not the first production using heavy influences from a musical artists work in fact the director is that of The Who's Tommy, Jersey Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar which are already popular modern music works.
I love the Flaming Lips, this sounds so cool! If this play is anything like their concerts it should be amazing. Their concerts basically entail the lead singer walking over the audience in a giant hamster ball, balloon drops, live feeds of different parts of the lead singers face, and many outrageous costumes (everything from aliens to an army of Santas). I hope this is good so that it can come to Broadway and I will get a chance to see it. Giant robots and weird puppets are right up my ally.
