Why I Support Obama: Columbus Stagehand Shares Personal Story

aflcio.org/Blog: Thomas N. Sico, a member of State and Theatrical Employees (IATSE) Local 12 in Columbus, Ohio, wrote the following letter to IATSE officers about President Obama’s support for using IATSE members at a Monday campaign rally in Columbus. IATSE President Matthew Loeb forwarded the letter to us.

I really appreciate this article if only because it takes a different tone than most American political articles. There's an overwhelmingly negative sense in America about everything from unions to the presidency to left vs. right and just about everything under the sun. The person who wrote this letter though, was happy because of plain and simple democracy, and that fact that it worked. The great part is, that not only did it work, but it worked for a theatre union. Often, theatre unions are overlooked; when people think of unions they think of factory workers and coal miners. It brings a little hope to one's heart to know that even President Obama can take a little of his time to focus on theatre unions and help keep theatre tech people working.

This is a great story and I am extremely glad I got to read it. It has a great encouraging tone to it and make me feel glad the our president is willing to stand up for unions. His willingness to do so allowed the people of local 12 to get a job that would otherwise been lost to people of the campaign. To hear that he went above and beyond this and stayed to meet the local is heart warming.

I agree this is very heart warming. Often times as stage hands you can feel unnoticed or forgotten. It means a lot that the leader of our country would take time, especially time right before an election to go out of his way and thank the stage hands. Obama is very good example and role model and i highly doubt Romney would have done that.

There has been a good deal of discussion in the last five years or so at least that unions are outdated and many believe that they should be put to rest. Being the son of a union Millwright and having work on their sites and in theatre/shops that are also union I've seen an heard a lot from both sides, pro vs anti-union. And I have to say that few union workers in a lot industries can share stories like this and it's nice to see that at least in some places, and for at least the next four years there is still strong support for the working tradesman.
