IATSE Ratifies Non-LA/NY Deal

This deal is great for the stability of the industry. I am however concerned because the annual percentage raise is barely meeting the national inflation rate and according to the trend it does not seem to be dropping off at all. In 2008 at the height of the financial crisis the inflation rate was at over 4 percent double the raise. Also the amount of contribution is raising which means it will be a net loss compared to years past. In every aspect of the economy we seem to be slipping backwards and the fact that the union is happy just to keep up with inflation seems to suggest that the US worker has just given up an optimistic stance and is happy just to have work.
I think this move is strategic and smart for protection union members, and their families. I share Luke's concern that a 2% increase in salary might not necessarily be enough given that the rate of inflation is much higher. I think the health benefit contributions are especially important with recent legislation that is going to change the healthcare system in a lot of ways we are unaware of at this juncture. But I like that the deal allows for an increase in contribution for each year, $5/day the first year, $10/day the next year, etc...My last question would be if these arrangements apply to anyone under a union contract? Or only those outside the LA and NY areas as the title and the last sentence of the article indicate...
