ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
OLNEY THEATRE CENTER, an AEA COST theater with four performance
facilities producing an eight-play season plus special events, seeks full-time
Assistant Technical Director. This position reports to the Technical Director and
assists with all duties associated with the design, production, and installation of
scenery.




PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Drafting construction drawings from plots and plans provided by Designers
for all productions in the Mainstage season and special events.
• Assisting the Technical Director supervising all technical staff and interns
for the Producer.
• Assisting the Technical Director serving as technical contact, principal
liaison, and institutional support for the Set Designer for each production.
• Assisting the Technical Director maintaining and organizing all theatre
equipment, inventory, and stock.
• Assisting the Technical Director maintaining an up-to-date stock inventory
and house ground plans for each Designer. These inventories and ground
plans will be filed with the Producing Manager as updated.
• Assisting the Technical Director updating routine maintenance records
with the Production Manager as requested and defined by the Production
Manager, notifying the Production Manager of the cost and occurrence of
all repairs occurring off premises, and coordinating all emergency or
scheduled approved repairs.
• Assisting the Technical Director tracking and reporting to the Production
Manager on all set and prop budget categories for all productions.
• Assisting the Technical Director serving as liaison for the Producer with
outside suppliers and contractors for all maintenance agreements, service
contracts, and the purchase of supplies for each production. All accounts
and purchases must be reconciled with the Production Manager within 72
hours of purchase or commitment. Any purchases suggested outside of
agreed budget guidelines must be approved in advance of commitment
with the Production Manager.
• Being present at all production meetings, technical rehearsals, dress
rehearsals and preview performances as requested.
• Assisting the Technical Director coordinating and overseeing the hiring
and managing of any over-hire crew as requested during these periods.
The Production Manager must approve all contracted labor.
• Assisting the Technical Director reviewing all plots and plans as provided
by the Designers to ensure the successful execution.
• Assisting the Technical Director plotting all budget and build schedules to
be approved by the Production Manager prior to the inception of a project.
• Assisting the Technical Director purchasing and/or renting all equipment
and materials necessary to execute the plans of the Designers.
• Assisting the Technical Director coordinating all crew for all shows and
any special projects designated during the tenure of this agreement.
• Assisting the Technical Director handling all errands pertaining to
production as needed or at the request of the Production Manager.
• Assisting the Technical Director overseeing and educating the interns of
all duties required to complete their assignments and supervising them
directly through the opening preview week and generally through the
entire run of the show.
• Assisting the Technical Director monitoring the progress and maintenance
of all aspects of each production through its run.
• Assisting the Technical Director supervising the strike of each production.
• Assisting the Technical Director returning all borrowed and/or rented
equipment no later than the Friday following the strike of any production,
unless other arrangements are made with the permission of the
Production Manager.
• Working with the Production Manager, Technical Director, and Artistic
Director on any long-term projects and capital improvements.
• Being on call and/or available for any other special events that may be
added to the production calendar.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Four years experience in theatre
• Knowledge of:
o Theatrical design and technical production
o Technical design/drafting (AutoCad required; VectorWorks a plus)
o Various theatre equipment including, but not limited to, welding,
rigging, lighting and sound systems and related machinery
o Theatre operations and methods and techniques used in the
production of live events
o Principles and practices of theatre safety
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Education/training equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited
college or university with major course work in technical theatre.
