LA’s Center Theatre Group Training Teens for the National Stage:

backstage.com: If they say their lines right, some Los Angeles area high school students will have the chance to perform on Broadway next year. As part of a national monologue competition hosted by Center Theatre Group, three finalists from the Southland will travel to New York next May to perform lines from an August Wilson play at the famed dramatist’s namesake theater in New York.

Seeing Center Theatre Group participate in the August Wilson Monologue Competition again is no surprise. CTG has always made outreach and supporting youth artists a central part of their programming and mission statement. Inviting young artists to workshop with the professional staff and guest artists at one of the many Center Theatre Group Los Angeles locations is fairly common. The other day I was looking at their financial records on guidestar.com and Csalt ends to spend all of the money it brings in in the not-for-profit sectors (approximately $50 million annually) and given that they only run two theatres through the not-for-profit label, quite a sum is left for outreach.
