SUPPORT STAFF POSITION

The position of TECHNICAL DIRECTOR is available in the Fine and Performing Arts Department.  This position is on a full-time, 12-month basis working under the Theatre Facilities Coordinator. 

FUNCTION:  Responsible for supporting theatre events, serving as technical and design support for theatre events, and performing or arranging for necessary maintenance of theatre equipment.  Specific responsibilities include: planning, scheduling and implementing the construction of scenic designs for Theatre and Music program productions, using knowledge of standard theatrical construction techniques to build scenery and scenic elements accurately and safely from drawings, plans and verbal instructions; using effective communication skills and knowledge of safety standards to instruct students and other staff in safe and appropriate use of tools, supplies and equipment; communicating effectively with college and community users of the facilities to coordinate technical support, supervise necessary crew, and oversee successful execution of events; using basic painting skills to execute general painting from renderings or photographs; assuring that proper safety measures are followed, including regulations under OSHA and NFPA electrical and life safety codes; organizing, tracking and maintaining inventories of scenic elements, props, drapes, furniture, tools, equipment and supplies; instructing and supervising temporary-hourly employees and students in theatre shop; and maintaining technical theatre equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre, Technical Theatre or Entertainment Technology or four years of professional theatre technical direction experience is required. Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. At least two productions professionally or academically serving as Technical Director, Asst. Technical Director, or Master Carpenter is required. Professional theatre experience in an academic setting is preferred. Proficiency at reading scale, reading and drafting plans, and producing construction drawings is required. Ability to lift up to 65 pounds at a time and work effectively on catwalks, ladders and lifts is also required. Portfolio of previous set construction projects is preferred.

SCHEDULE:  Schedule varies depending on production schedule and theatre events.

SALARY:  Grade 7, on the 12-month Support Staff Salary Scale.  Minimum starting salary: $30,203.  Includes excellent fringe benefit package.
