It is probably obvious that I love to see the behind the scenes, the makings, of such intricate TV shows much as Game of Thrones. Now I want to go out and watch the show! which I know I have to do. I like that there was a spectrum of the amount of visual effects included in the list of awards because I believe that the subtle effects that one may not even notice would be digital make a show be the success it is. One may not think that a character from Boardwalk Empire would need his face digitally mutated, I just suspected that stage makeup would take care of that. On that note I know that HD TV requires perfection from the production team.
All 4 of these clips were stunning. The Game of Thrones VFX breakdown was especially enlightening. Many of the components the clip showcased weren't things I would've assumed were digitally created or altered. For example, almost every background in the clip had been radically altered - castles were expanded, cliffs were created, storms were intensified. The background isn't something I'm usually conscious of when I'm watching a visual-effects heavy scene.
Of course, the dragons in Game of Thrones were obviously digitally created. I love seeing the breakdown of each step in the animation process - first the skeleton and movement, then the skin is layered on top, then color and texture is fleshed out.
It's amazing to me how many things, especially backgrounds, in current TV shows are digitally created. Obviously, there are many affects like those completely fantastical ones in Game of Thrones which are clearly VFX, yet even some things in that series like the slight manipulation of the backgrounds goes unnoticed. I expect a show like Game of Thrones to use a lot of VFX. Boardwalk Empire on the other hand surprises me in the amount of effects it uses. When I think about it though, it VFX provides a very good way to really represent the setting in a period piece. The VFX really helps set the time period for Boardwalk Empire.
These videos were amazing. For me who does not know much about the creation of special effects it was really exciting to see how these elements are layered on top of each other in order to create the final image. A lot more of the image was computer generated then I would have guessed. I also found the commercial particularly touching and I am glad that it got recognized. All of these clips are stunning works.
Ive experienced a roller coasted of emotions through the past years on how I felt about knowing the behind the scenes of movie and theatrical magic. At first I thought it was fascinating - and then I grew into a phase where I was bummed because it seemed the magic was sucked out of everything. Now that is still true sometimes, but now a days when I see a clip that is just stunning I can appreciate it at a whole new level. A lot of times I find myself interested in seeing movies like the Game of Thrones just to snoop about the processes and VFX breakdowns of how it came to be. Another example is the trend of artist making movies about their tours - I like seeing the behind the scenes glimpse. These videos were enlightening and grew my appreciation for the movies.
I am a loyal follower of Boardwalk Empire as well as Game of Thrones and this was amazing to see. I always thought that his face was done via makeup. I also never knew that they used so many effects to create the atmosphere in Boardwalk Empire. I knew they did with Game of Thrones, but not as much as with Boardwalk Empire. I saw a feature on HBO where they did show a bit of how much work goes into the pre and post production work and I must say, both shows have amazing teams.
I'm sure I didn't see that add during the Olympics, but it was touching and I love the slogan at the end. It was great how they showed the similarities of the different nationalities who have the same common dream and goal and how although each process varies from individual to individual, everyone basically goes through similar paths in life.
