An interview with Rory O'Malley
The Tartan Online: Tony Award-nominated actor Rory O'Malley (CFA '03) returned to his alma mater last Monday to participate in a staged reading of 8, a play that documents the court case battling to overturn Proposition 8 in California. The Tartan spoke with him after the reading to talk about his experiences at Carnegie Mellon, his activism work, and his role in The Book of Mormon.

This interview is very inspiring to read. It is fantastic to see all of these successful alumni still get involved at CMU and continue to show support for their school. I can't wait to see who the next big thing is going to be after Corey Cott! All of the students here are so talented...that is what makes this place so inspiring!
I think its important to continue to support and be involved with your school after your career flourishes, because its the program that you went through and the support of alumn like this that allow us to grow and develop as successfully as we do. in 20 years its our responsibility to give the students here the same opportunity we had when we came here - and through visiting, supporting, promoting, and donating that can be accomplished.
I think it is fantastic that our alums come back and want to contribute to our collective learning through lectures, performances, talkbacks, and master classes. All our professors have a lot of skills they can teach us, and can help us grow certain abilities, but the recent alums provide insight into the current culture of the industry, which is sometimes harder to be taught in an academic setting.
I also think it is great that Rory was willing to sit down with the Tartan while he was here, as it provides wider exposure, and increases the utility he brings to campus.
