My Feet Are Killing Me!

Occupational Health & Safety: Here lies yet another article regarding foot protection in the workplace. One would think that, for as long as this standard has been in place, we would find every workplace in compliance and experiencing fewer foot injuries than in previous years. Working as a consultant the past few years, however, I have continued to visit facilities where foot protection is neither provided nor worn, leading to a continuance of foot injuries. And in 2010, foot injuries made up 25 percent of all reported disabling injuries!

I remember being surprised that the CMU SOD shop did not require crew members to wear protective footwear. I wouldn't expect Carnegie Mellon to provide footwear for students because we are expected to buy our own safety gear (even though glasses/goggles and ear protection are always available).
I'm a huge proponent for safety, so I agree that employees should be provided with protective footwear. This shouldn't be a money issue, it should be an safety issue. I'd like to think my shop manger cares about me enough to keep me safe, rather than attribute their protective measures to merely legal precautions.
Lastly, this article serves as yet another reminder that I need to purchase some good shoes.
