'Last Touch First' puts skills of older dancers on display

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: At one point artistic director Jiri Kylian had three companies at Nederlans Dans Theater, most commonly labeled NDT 1, NDT 2 and NDT 3. The first was the main company, the second a stepping stone for young dancers and the third served to accommodate master performers over the age of 40.

Something that I've always thought was really a shame about pursuing a career as a dancer was that the person's prime is hit so early. One trains for many years, often starting very young, probably performs from their late teens to MAYBE their late twenties (if they're lucky), and is then considered old. There are many reasons for this - some particular ones being that body shape and physical ability begin to change around 30. However, these dancers obviously still have that passion - they wouldn't have trained for so long if they didn't. Therefore, I think it's great that those who still carry some ability have an opportunity to showcase it in an environment where they are accepted and encouraged to do something they love.
