Art and Science: Film, Photography,Digital Video

Still and motion pictures can be emotionally charged, butthere is a great deal of science as well as creativity involved in producingthese images.This course attempts to demystify some of the scientificfoundations of photography, film and digital video.Three weeks are devoted toeach medium as students deal with topics such as camera construction, emulsionand darkroom chemistry, exposure relationships, manipulating lighting contrastratios, the elements of the video image, compression and human perceptualtraits. Students will gain an understanding of the ways in which traits can bemanipulated to create different “looks,” perceptual effects and viewerresponses. Grading is based on assignments, class participation and oneexam.This course can be taken for two credits at most of our educationalpartner schools.The non-credit tuition for this course is $275 (course feeincluded).
Motion Picture Fundamentals: Filmand Digital Video
Prerequisite: None. 42 classroom hours. FLM 101 G Friday 10:00-1:00 Zavala
Motion Picture Fundamentals is a hands-on introduction tokey photographic concepts and the core concepts of self-expression with movingimages. Students shoot photographs, digital video and motion picture film tolearn the basic principles and techniques of light, composition, camerawork,editing and storytelling.All equip- ment is provided, including 35mm stillcameras, mini-DV video cameras, super-8 film cameras and digital workstationswith Apple’s Final Cut editing program.Those unfamiliar with Mac OS shouldconsider taking “Introduction to Digital Editing” prior to or concurrent withthis course. Students pay for film, videotape and lab costs. Grading is basedon student projects and written exams. In addition to tuition, a $70 course feeis charged.
