Theater Notes: Pittsburgh Westinghouse picked for musical theater project
Post gazette: Pittsburgh Westinghouse 6-12 has been chosen to participate in the "Make a Musical" Junior Theater Project, which aims to create sustainable musical theater programs in underserved middle and high schools. The initial 20-city program is being launched by NBC (which will premiere the pilot "Smash," about the making of a Broadway musical, on Feb. 6) and Music Theatre International.

I have seen a lot of articles going around about new and large organization sponsored programs and grants for Pittsburgh area educational theatres in the past several weeks; it is satisfying to know that the younger generations are being thought about and looked after. With a push toward the more concrete aspects of math and sciences for today's kids - due to both well covered research and economical factors - an outlet for expression such as the performing arts is critical. Whether the development of a musical in this theatre turns out to be life chaning of just an exciting new experience, it will certainly provide a memory and an opportunity that will not soon be forgotten.
How great, in a time when schools all seem to be cutting arts programs, to still see a company developing them. I hope with a name like NBC attached to this, the program will get more attention and be able to develop in more cities and at more schools. As the article says, it's great that there aren't simply a number of guest artists swooping into a school to create a show and then leave, but rather, this school, if the program works, will now know how to put on a show every year. I hope more programs like this will continue to form and show people that the arts are an important part of a well-rounded education.
