This Guy Didn't Know He Shot Himself in the Head with a Nail Gun

Gizmodo: Dante Autullo is a tough guy. He's also, according to his wife, a very accident prone guy. So when he accidentally hit his head with a nail gun and only saw a scratch, he didn't think anything of it... EVEN THOUGH HE HAD A FREAKING NAIL LODGED IN HIS BRAIN.

Common injuries I can see people not realizing, it is showing when a serious injury goes unrecognized. People should always error on the cautious side whenever they feel they have an injury. This reminds me of that one actor who will always push through their injury and in turn have to miss rehearsals or performances. A little bit of safety, such as not using a nail gun overheard, or being more aware of your surrounding is something I feel more individuals need. Just being introduced to very common incidents helps people become more aware of unsafe situations they may put them in. The videos made by OSHA are simple, easy things to be screened and can make you aware of situations to better deal with concerns.

This is ladder safety 101. In fact, I hope this very situation shows up in next year's ladder safety course, because it is more unbelievable than most of those examples! He was not only reaching overhead on a ladder, presumably also over to the side since he was nailing into a wall, he then used a tool that has tremendous recoil potential, a thing he must've known if he had put up the rest of the wall... That's just textbook recipe for disaster. In my mind, the greatest tragedy here is that evolution did not take full opportunity to better the species as a whole.

I personally find this story rather frightening- it is so important to be aware of what is happening to your body.. even if it doesn't cause you the slightest of pain. Although I was shocked to read that someone doesn't notice a nail in his brain-- I think back to how powerful the mind is over the body, and reconsider. Sometimes the worst of pains can be completely shut out if one is in the correct mindset, and the fact that this man didn't acknowledge the injury itself (because he had no idea of it!) probably saved him from a large amount of agony: sometime the shock of the accident itself is more scary than the pain involved.

It's amazing what the human body can endure, and how lucky some people get. I remember seeing a story similar to this one a few years back about a guy being hit by a nail from a nail gun just below the eye, and if the nail had gone in at a slightly different angle or up or down a bit, he probably would have been dead or severely incapacitated. I imagine it's a somewhat similar case here. Still amazing that he survived, and the he's basically unharmed. Just got to be a little lucky sometimes

Ummm What? This does make sence though it is like people that get shot with bullets and just because of where the bullet landed in their body they it would do more damage to have it removed then to just leave it in. This is insanity, it also proves that I don't think that it is necessarily a good thing to be "tough". I think that if you are in pain or if you just shot a nail into your head, you should probably do something about it. Get the help you need sucking it up only prolongs the situation. I'm glad this guy did get help though!

I think this says something about the amazing amount of stress the human body can undertake, as well as the unfortunate mistakes and slips of judgement humans can make. Safety in theatre is one of, if not the most, stressed concepts in our teachings and integrated into every facet of operation in a space. As obvious as the Ladder Safety lecture seemed, it boggles my mind that outrageous occurrences like this one still happen. I hope his recovery is successful!

This absolutely incredible. I would consider Autullo a very lucky man, even if he is accident prone. It was risky to start with by working with a pneumatic nailer above is head, but I can't believe he didn't notice what had actually happen. He's very fortunate that the nail happened to stop in the right location in order to not injure him. Also, if he had been working with someone else, I bet they could have seen what happened and have gotten him proper treatment sooner, even if he thought nothing had happened.

wait... are we not supposed to swing nail guns with our finger on the trigger on a 30 year old bank ladder?
my bad... i mean come on? really? I want to see where this guy learned how to use a nail gun. how many stupid factors went into this guys genius impromptu brain surgery
A: holding down the trigger
B: performing the swing and nail
C: not knowing how much your nail gun is going to recoil.
Ive seen fairly bad injuries from guys who knew what they were doing, nail guns double tapping and hitting a hand, grinders binding and kicking back. this however is darwinism in effect. as AJ said this guy is the reason for all the long boring OSHA videos. There is a nickname for people like this guy in the EMS industry, Job Security.
