NYC Sets TV Production Record in 2011

Backstage: Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Thursday that television production in New York City hit a record high in 2011, Variety reported. The city was the location for 23 series in the 2011-12 season, compared with just nine a decade ago.

Well, this news is pretty incredible and a little shocking at the same time. I knew that there were a lot of sets for TV and film all spaced out around the city. I guess I simply had no idea how many though. It was probably spread out far and wide because thinking about it now, there are a lot of shows alone that have their section of the city. Gossip Girl, for one, has the upper east side booked solid for their sets, along with Sex and the City. I also know that Chelsea is the home of many episodes of Law and Order, while 30 Rock has mid town. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
It should be noted that it does a lot for the city. Businesses like MOOD Fabrics has benefitted from shows like Project Runway. Other times, it is exciting for New Yorkers to witness each shooting. It also provides so many with jobs and exposure to the shops around the area, places that go beyond the regular tourist attractions. Personally, it is always nice to hear how accommodating the mayor and the city makes it to the film makers.

so 23 different series decided they all wanted to take place in the same place... cool. What about a little thing called variation. Not everyone wants to or does or fantasizes about living in New York. Granted just as JS states, so many series filming in New york does open up great work opportunities and open up markets for various businesses but this just goes to show how monotonous show ideas have become. Really shows need to develop more originality. Is that really too much to ask for?
