Sam Shepard to Receive Inaugural Ellen Stewart Award from La MaMa

Stage Directions: New York avant-garde stalwart La MaMa is gearing up to celebrate their 50th anniversary and honor the legacy of their founder Ellen Stewart, who died in January. As part of their 50th year celebration they will present not only a gala, but a block party as well. They will also hand out the inaugural Ellen Stewart Award, honoring an artist who “embodies the courage and pioneering spirit that Ms. Stewart encouraged at La MaMa, an artist who carries on her ideal of challenging conventional theatrical boundaries and expanding our understanding of human potential.” The recipient of the award will select a young theatre artist to develop and present a new work at La MaMa. The first-ever recipient of the award will be Sam Shepard.

Sam shepard is one of my favorite playwrights. this is one of the strongest living playwrights and has a catalogue of work to justify it. the way shepard has captivated audiences in so many different ways is what makes him such a facinating subject and represents how he truly could be a renaissance man. now that he has moved out of a period of hiatus it will be interesting to see the kind of works he produces and hopefully we see some new material that is a little different from his traditional forum.
