Press Release: Carnegie Mellon University To Receive Gift From William S. Dietrich II
Carnegie Mellon University: Businessman, scholar, philanthropist and longtime Carnegie Mellon University trustee William S. Dietrich II has announced a plan to provide a record-breaking gift of a $265 million fund to support CMU — the largest gift in CMU's history and one of the 10 largest by an individual to a private higher education institution in the United States.

The funding of higher education is no doubt important to both individuals and societies alike. However, with an institution such as Carnegie Mellon receiving donations from multiple sources and milking students for tuition left and right, I have to wonder if there is anything "better" $265 million dollars could have gone to. There are many people across the world who simply cannot afford to think about college at all. They are busy practicing self-preservation in lands that are ridden with war and disease. Even the United States is home to underprivileged communities without the benefit of proper education. So why not fight these problems at their source? Why not directly serve those who are in true need instead of feeding an institution a five course meal? I am not trying to say that I am not grateful for what Bill gave and how it could personally affect something I am a part of, I am just stating that there are greater financial holes waiting to be filled.
Although I do agree with Kassondra to some degree, I believe that what people do with their money is their own decision and if Bill wishes to donate an excessive amount of cash flow to us Tartans he should be free to do so. I feel that you should invest in what you love in life and profession. Bill's heart was in this school and so too was his wallet. For that, I thank you Bill.
