With a theatre as illustrious as the Guthrie I am surprised to see them opening a season with a Shakespeare show. While Shakespeare might bring in the high society crowd, and the people who see Shakespeare because it is what one does as a cultured person, will this really sell? Also this show will set the tone for the 2011-2012 season. While it might help subscriptions I would be surprised to see it help individual ticket sales. With my skepticism about their marketing aside, it is within the preview of their mission statement to fulfill the classical theatre clause. Their entire season does not seem to have a logical progression with plays from all over the spectrum and no inherent reasoning behind their show choices. This season at the Guthrie should be interesting and fun but I am baffled by their variety of shows.
