No Women Nominated for DGA Awards

womenandhollywood: "My screen saver is a picture of Kathryn Bigelow holding her two Oscars. Each day when my computer boots up that is the first image I see. I never expected a woman to win best director and best picture last year (though I was hopeful), and I sure don’t expect it this year (because I am a realist), but it is an image that I hold onto because it shows what it possible.

This article resonated with me because I see the same thing happening (though to a lesser extent, thankfully) on Broadway right now. For instance, as a parallel to Ms. Bigelow's success, Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark, which could be considered one of the more "guy-friendly" musicals on Broadway right now, is directed by Julie Taymor. I haven't seen the show, but I think if it is a critical success (it's already selling out and attracting all kinds of word-of-mouth), Taymor could well be in the running for a Tony, as could the members of her creative team (all male except the costume designer). Entertainment in general still seems to be a hard genre for women to get leading positions in when it comes to backstage (I can only think of the name of one woman I would rank with the best known LDs), but hopefully it's getting better.
