AFTRA Moves Closer to Merger with SAG

Backstage: AFTRA's national board Saturday continued down the path towards merger with SAG, "overwhelmingly pass(ing) a resolution formally authorizing AFTRA leadership to continue working with Screen Actors Guild in the Presidents' Forum for One Union and its 'Listening Tour,'" according to an AFTRA statement.

It certainly makes sense that AFTRA has been resoundingly positive in wanting to merge with SAG for the past few years. SAG certainly is viewed with higher regard and will likely help members of AFTRA get better contracts. This article never really mentions why SAG was so against the merger other than that they used to be managed by MembershipFirst. I do not understand why this merger would be deleterious to them; it allows for the one union to control wages for all TV, which has started to become a more common home for "movie stars", who can then still be protected by SAG.

I am unclear as to why SAG and AFTRA want to merge. Joe does make a good point of actors crossing over between film and TV, but there is nothing that says the actors can be in both unions. It seems that the CBA would be different and that two unions serve them better. Is it a fair comparasion to make between AEA and AGMA? What if they merged?

I am guessing the merger is driven by more power over producers and more money for P&H. Of course this is being touted as better for the members, but is it really better for the union? I am not sure I agree with the idea of the mergre...
